The guide
Welcome to MeowOS.
Everything you need in about two minutes. MeowOS is in closed access right now, so the first thing to know is how getting in works.
- InstallationCreate a folder named "Applications" in your Desktop. Open MeowOS.dmg and drag Meow OS into the new folder you just made. Open "Terminal", and run:
xattr -cr "$HOME/Desktop/Applications/Meow OS.app" - Sign in with GoogleA tab opens in your browser. Pick the Google account that was added to the list. If you see "This app is in closed access at the moment. Try again later!", that address is not on the list yet.
- Take the welcome tourThe first time you get in, a short welcome and a tour show you around. You can replay it any time from Settings, About.
- Let the VPN turn onWhen you sign in, a VPN turns on by itself. You do not need to do anything. Your pages open as soon as it is ready, which takes a moment.
- Sign in to TikTok, Instagram or SnapchatDo it once. TikTok opens on its login page until you are signed in. Your logins are saved to your MeowOS account (encrypted), so they come back after a restart, a reinstall or on a new Mac.
- Updates install themselvesEvery time MeowOS opens it checks for a newer version. When there is one it says “A new update is available!” and one click downloads it, installs it and restarts. There is nothing to download or drag.
Closed access
MeowOS is invite only. The list is checked every time you open the app, every time you sign in, and again every minute while it is open. If you are taken off the list while the app is open, it tells you straight away with a “Your permission has expired” message and a Refresh button, and Refresh shows the closed access page. If the app was closed, you see that page the next time you open it.
The VPN
A VPN turns on automatically when you sign in, and stays on while MeowOS is open. There is nothing to set up. If it cannot connect, you see a message and a Try again button. Free VPN servers are sometimes busy, so waiting a few minutes usually fixes it.
Questions
Will I stay logged in?
Yes. As long as you sign in to MeowOS with the same Google account, your TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat logins come back after a restart, a reinstall or on a new Mac. Sign out of MeowOS and this Mac forgets them until you sign back in.
Google says the app is blocked
Some school Google accounts stop third-party sign-in. Use a personal Google account, and ask for that one to be added to the list.
The app says an update is available
Press Update now. MeowOS downloads the newest version, installs it and restarts by itself. If macOS asks whether MeowOS may access files in the folder it lives in, press Allow. If it cannot update itself (for instance when it is still running from the disk image), it opens the download section instead, and you install the new version over the old one.
How does it know there is a newer version?
By date, not by version number. Every version carries the date and time it was built, and MeowOS compares that with the newest one on this site.
